Primary 3-7

Our Primary 3–7 programme offers an inspiring route into teaching, preparing you to work with children across the Early Years Foundation Stage (ages 3–5) and Key Stage One (ages 5–7), while giving you a clear understanding of Key Stage Two (ages 7–11). Our ambitious, inclusive and evidence-informed curriculum is framed around five key competencies and underpinned by The Model for Great Teaching, helping you to build strong subject knowledge, master effective teaching approaches and grow into a reflective, resilient professional. The phase- and subject- specific elements focus on the Primary National Curriculum and develop your expertise in early education- exploring how young children learn best through play, exploration and purposeful interaction.

From the first week in September, you’ll spend four days a week in school (at least 135 days, or 75% of your course). You’ll begin your training in a Key Stage One classroom (Years 1–2) before moving to an Early Years setting after February half-term, giving you experience across both phases.

Our placement pattern allows you to spend significant time in two schools, giving you the opportunity to grow, reflect and flourish as a developing teacher, while experiencing life in the classroom and seeing the vital role schools play at the heart of their communities. You’ll teach across all areas of the Primary National Curriculum, learn from expert teachers and plan engaging lessons with the support of your mentor. As your confidence grows, you’ll move from leading small groups and parts of lessons to whole-class teaching, supported every step of the way. You’ll also engage in reflective discussions and professional learning conversations, while contributing to wider school life through enrichment activities, parent and carer communication and involvement in school trips, clubs and events.

The programme also includes Immersive Days in Early Years and Key Stage One settings, where you’ll explore how skilled adults and well-designed learning environments support early development. Alongside this, Intensive Training and Practice(ITAP) experiences give you the chance to apply your learning in real classrooms and understand how early education links to later stages of schooling.

With a blend of school-based experience, centre-based training and specialist input from Subject Leads, you’ll be fully supported to develop into a confident, knowledgeable teacher. On successful completion, you’ll be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 master’s-level credits, delivered and awarded by Sheffield Hallam University, rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted for both early years and primary teacher training.
